Twitter (And I) React to Daft Punk’s ‘Random Access Memories’

daft punk remixes meme

Ok so today seems to be National Daft Punk Day (ironically on the same day The National’s album leaked…post hopefully coming soon) and with seemingly every artist weighing in on this monstrous album, we felt it necessary to highlight some of our favorite insights thus far via Twitter.

DotEXE starts it off with probably the most obvious of observations. In an era where Twitter gives everyone an “equal” voice amongst the internet, even the most uneducated of music listeners will take the opportunity to express how they think this album is “boring” because there are no “epic drops”. Go home “bro”.

While it’s impossible not to love Zedd’s troll-like sense of humor, this is actually probably one of the most accurate statements to come out of the day. Growing up in a house with a father that LOVES jazz (dinner as a kid was accompanied by a soundtrack of David Benoit, Kenny G, David Sanborn etc.), it’s impossible to not make connections to great jazz guitarists like George Benson. A+ review from Anton Zaslavski.

While I am admittedly part of “the youth” and a relatively new listener to dance music, it has been disturbing me as a lifelong music fan that live instrumentation was seemingly being phased out of popular music. Kids are treating music like it can only be enjoyed with the assistance of MDMA and even rap music (whose entire value is in the LYRICS for me) is rapping about their favorite girl Molly. Pharrell Williams himself said it and it’s refreshingly true in the case of RAM, “You don’t need MDMA to enjoy this music.”

Let me begin by saying I am a HUGE fan of the art of sound design. Teaching yourself is a time-consuming task that requires tons of trial and error, risks, and TERRIBLE sounds coming out of the speakers but when done correctly it has the ability to take your music to the next level. Aritsts like Porter Robinson, Knife Party, Synchronice & KOAN Sound come to mind as prime examples off the top of my head but that’s not to say I’m not missing some. Point is that in the haze of this “EDM” movement, it sometimes seems that people forget the musicality and human passion that poured out of the songs we loved before. Goldroom articulates this perfectly.

Hit the jump for some other favorite responses that may or may not be updated as the rest of the Twitter-verse decides to weight in on Daft Punk’s latest album. Fire back in the comments to tell me you agree, don’t get what I’m saying or just wanna tell me to fall in a hole. Feedback is always welcome.

3LAU – I Could Be The Bass (3LAU Bootleg)

3LAU - I Could Be The Bass (3LAU Bootleg)

This is just too awesome to see. With their remix of I Could Be The One having been blared at full volume over the Ultra Music Festival speakers courtesy of Porter Robinson, the Saulsky brothers of Synchronice have found their track being used again by none other than 3LAU. Their remix is the focus of the third installment of his March Mash Monday series in combination with remixes of Brohammer from Nari & Milani as well as the MakJ remix of All Gold Everything…and the 100000000% overused In My Mind acapella which I’ll try to ignore.

Track Listing:
Avicii & Nicky Romero – Could Be The One (Synchronice Remix)
Georgi Kay – In My Mind (Acapella)
Topher Jones – Brohammer (Nari & Milani Remix)

Blackburner ft. Geri X- In Love With The City (Synchronice Remix)

Blackburner ft. Geri X- In Love With The City (Synchronice Remix) OUT FOR FREE

Well I’m guessing you can call this a successful weekend for Synchronice. The Saulsky brothers had their remix of Avicii & Nicky Romero’s collab I Could Be The One played out by by Porter Robinson during his magical Ultra Music Festival set at sunset and concurrently surpassed the 15K mark of Facebook fans. The brothers reciprocated the love by giving out their progressive house remix of Blackburner for FREE and further solidifying that these guys are on a B-Line for the top. As with all Synchronice tracks, stay tuned for the second breakdown…that’s where the magic happens.

Porter Robinson – Ultra Music Festival Mainstage Set 2013

porter robinson main stage ultra music festival 2013

I’m not gonna be writing a post for every set that comes out of Ultra Music Festival this weekend but Porter Robinson’s sunset Main Stage set absolutely blew me away. Tuning in via the UMF live feed, I was glued to the screen for the full hour entranced by the impeccable track selection and frantic but precise mixing of America’s gem of EDM. There was not a single boring second in this set and the crowd looked like they were teetering between having their faces melted and covered in tears.

Some standouts include a 100% In The Bitch VIP edit (we’ll be finding a download/rip hopefully soon) as well as some love from Porter for TNJ favorites Synchronice for their I Could Be The One remix and Jay Cosmic for his remix of Saturn. I’m on my third listen through today and will be doing a aggregate post of other notable sets from the weekend later today or tomorrow…just couldn’t wait a second longer to get this set to you guys!

3LAU – 3LAU HAUS #10 (Don’t Blink)

3LAU - 3LAU HAUS #10 (Don't Blink)

I really hope that people are willing to let 3LAU shake the tag of just being a “mashup DJ”, although I’m fairly certain we’re past that. This 10th edition of the 3LAU HAUS features a whole assortment of Beatport-topping singles being seemlessly blended with vocals from your favorite Top 40 and electronic tracks. TNJ favorites Synchronice found their way on with their remix of I Could Be The One and it’s awesome to see 3LAU show some love for the Mikkas remix of Unison by Porter Robinson. Justin Blau moves through 22 tracks in 28 minutes with perfect mixing precision and only goes to further the sentiment that he is going to have a MONSTER 2013.

Avicii & Nicky Romero – I Could Be The One (Synchronice Remix)

Avicii & Nicky Romero - I Could Be The One (Synchronice Remix)

Have we mentioned that there is literally no sound Synchronice can’t master? This time they take the monster Avicii [who's renting out an entire hotel as his own during Ultra Music Festival if you didn't hear] and Nicky Romero collaboration I Could Be The One (formerly Nicktim/Fuck School) and infuse equal parts progressive, big room dutch house and electro into 6 minutes of absolute madness. The Saulsky brothers once again prove why its invaluable to listen to a track the whole way through; the first and second breakdowns are 10000% different and equally impressive. Expect a remix of Far East Movement from them out on Interscope Records and if you want a “you heard it here first” moment there’s a real high likelihood of a remix of Datsik. I’m not sayin…I’m just sayin.

BroBible's White Girl Wasted Weekend Power Hour

Once again it is Thursday, which means the already-short week is basically over and while some people have “resolutions” and “should stop making the weekend a 3 day affair” and other garbage like that, we appreciate you getting the beer and shotglasses with TNJ and BroBible for the White Girl Wasted Weekend Power Hour. We got a wide range of music from all over the place including a remix of the We Are Farmers commercial featuring Diplo and All Gold Everything aka “Popped A Molly I’m Sweatin

Dirty Vegas – Days Go By

days go by dirty vegas

We are interrupting your regularly scheduled NYE programming for this throwback that has been stuck in my head for the last 2 days thanks to the Saulsky brothers of Synchronice. If you don’t remember the original Dirty Vegas track from either the Mitsubishi Eclipse commercials way back or possibly the worlds greatest music video with the breakdancer, please educate yourself below before proceeding. This was all spun into motion when Synchronice uploaded an acoustic cover of the song that they did while bored and snowed in this past weekend and you can check that below the video.

BroBible’s White Girl Wasted Weekened Power Hour: New Years Eve Edition

white girl on ground

This marks the end of one of the wildest years of my life. A year ago I couldn’t have imagined that I would be going to Pier 94 tonight as press or making this power hour for great guys like the people at BroBible and having all of that is only making the TNJ crew hungrier to do some really cool stuff next year. This mix has a lot of my favorite songs from this past year, some throwbacks from WAY back courtesy of Scott’s computer and a couple little easter eggs like the George Lopez Show theme song somewhere in there. Follow our Instagram at ThatNewJam to see some of the cool shots Scott and I will be taking at Synchronice in Brooklyn and Afrojack, Diplo, Sazon Booya & Rusko at Pier 94!

Power Hour Must-Haves: 3LAU – Oh Gawd (3LAU Mashtrap), Beastie Boys – Intergalactic (5 & A Dime Remix), DJ Kool – Let Me Clear My Throat (Whole-Z Remix)

Miike Snow – Animal (Synchronice Big Room Remix)

0

Damn TNJ loves the Saulsky brothers. Synchronice reached the impressive milestone of 10,000 Facebook fans and it looks like these guys are about to blow UP. Shows in London while James is studying abroad, trap remixes out on Interscope for names like Far East Movement and believe us when we say this is the tip of the iceberg. We’ve been on board with them since Day 1 of TNJ and we can’t wait to see where they’re headed. As a thank you for the 10k, they released this big room progressive remix of Miike Snow and having already released a glitch-hop track earlier this week, it makes you wonder is there anything these guys can’t do?
